Triclabendazole Dosage for Humans

Triclabendazole 250Mg Tablet is an antiparasitic medication primarily used in humans to treat fascioliasis, a liver fluke infection caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. It is one of the few drugs specifically effective against both immature and adult liver flukes, making correct dosing essential for successful treatment.

Standard Recommended Dosage

For most adults and children aged 6 years and older, the recommended dose of triclabendazole is 10 mg per kilogram of body weight. This dose is usually given as a single oral dose. In some cases, especially when the infection is severe or persistent, a total dose of 20 mg/kg may be prescribed. This higher dose is typically divided into two doses of 10 mg/kg, taken 12 hours apart.

Triclabendazole tablets are commonly available in 250 mg strength. The number of tablets required depends on the patient’s body weight. For example, a person weighing 50 kg would generally need a total dose of 500 mg (two 250 mg tablets) for a single-dose regimen.

How to Take Triclabendazole

Triclabendazole should be taken with food, preferably a fatty meal, as this significantly improves drug absorption and effectiveness. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Special Considerations

Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with liver disease, and medical supervision is advised. The safety of triclabendazole in children under 6 years, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers has limited data, so use in these groups should only occur when clearly needed and under medical guidance.

Follow-Up and Effectiveness

After treatment, follow-up tests such as stool examinations or imaging studies may be recommended to confirm parasite clearance. Most patients respond well to the standard dosing regimen, with high cure rates and manageable side effects.
